After doing some more work on the Chinese steeds, shop-teacher’s suggestion about getting rid of them finally sunk in. I’ve learned a decent bit about wrenching from them, but I’d rather be riding than wrenching.
This puts two bikes on the chopping block, that 150cc Ruckus clone I never really rode more than a few miles (was meant for the Gambler 500), and the CF Moto that had a pretty catastrophic failure a month in.
Hopefully to replace them both? I’m looking for a 125cc+ Honda Elite (with the flip up headlamp, Miata style!) or a 125cc+ Yamaha Riva (preferably in sky blue). While scouring my resources, I came across a few interesting finds.
This bike has been for sale for what will soon be a year now. $40k price tag aside, how are you even supposed to ride this? I’m hoping it has an airbag suspension of some kind, but even then my back and arms hurt just thinking about it.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Holy smokes, this is the highest mileage bike I’ve ever seen! I’ve heard stories of bikes with 100+k, but this is certainly the first actual 100k mile bike I’ve seen. The bars even have a coin holder for tollways. That overheating engine doesn’t sound like a good sign.. Also, that front end bothers me, not sure why.
If I were to go for a used European bike, I’d actually have a hankering for a BMW?
Honda Goldwing GL1100 Aspencade
Well, it maybe
was
an Aspencade, anyway.
I’m guessing the original paint was peeling so they blasted it with that green. You can even see the old decals underneath the green. Or maybe it’s not an Aspencade and they just have the false tank from one?
Idk. But for you GL1100 loving Oppos it’s probably a decent choice for a project. That frame appears to be cleaner than mine!
The PCX is quite possibly my favourite modern scooter. That paint, that colour matching, that style! And it doesn’t seem to carry the same kind of popularity tax that used Groms seem to have.
There are surprisingly few scooters out there when you decide to weed out the Chinese ones. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! though. This dirty thing is a 125cc...pop up headlight, digital dash, and all! Reminds me of shop teacher’s old $100 Elite 80, but more red and faster. Those tyres and that windscreen, though..
And to round out this list of interesting things on the marketplace, a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I didn’t know these things were 2 stroke! I didn’t think there were any two strokes in production nowadays. $700 is a steal for a two year old scoot with few miles.

Oh no, you shouldn’t have shown me this. *off to Google!*

what about a hot rod mobility scooter?

That green one is on bags. It has no sidestand, it just lowers onto a short center stand (either foot or actuated) that you flip down before you lower it.
They are like DONKS. Interesting, fun to look at, but I wouldn’t want to ride or own one.
That’s a lie. I would ride one at least once.

That green gold wing does it for me

That's a really good price for that Elite.

I know, right? I kinda want to get it and shave down that windscreen a little. :)
...Then forget that Ruckus clone ever existed.

Finally seeing sense!
Honestly, grab the PCX, you have enough stuff that is old and project status. The best thing about modern hondas, they will start every time. You trade off a little character, but you absolutely get a vehicle that will allow you to spend more time riding than wrenching.

Actually, if I dump the two scooters the only project I’ll have is the GSX. Everything else runs and rides. :D
That’s not even the cheapest PCX in this area either, but it’s definitely the most pretty. lol

I mean, get something with fuel injection :p
There is something real nice about not worrying about fuel quality, elevation, air
temperature, cold starts, hot starts, etc...

Hey now!! ...Darn it, you’re right. lol
Truth be told, my first efi bike will probably be brand new. I’d really love something like a new Triumph as a first new bike.

Yeah, ditch the Chinesium.

He's got a good point about the fuel injection.

That's one of the things I love about my Zuma 125. The thing just works. Period.

The Triumph dealer is three blocks from my house. I can’t let myself go in there!

Oh my, that is both cool, and literally walking distance from my house.

I have a trophy 1200. It’s a buttery smooth bike, and it builds crazy speed quite quickly. Just make sure corners weren’t cut in the repairs and maintenance of it.....I do recommend the 900 though. Well.....a better condition one than that one . Wouldn’t be too much faster than anything you;ve got right now while also being different. They look good when cut down a bit too.

You need to walk over to it and ride it home, then.

I wish the ad had a real price, because I bet he won't actually sell it to me for a dollar.

Here you go- in chicago , damn inexpensive, low mileage, has a sound that will make you weep it’s so beautiful.. and the whole ducati valves thing isn’t a 10th as difficult as everyone will have you believe....

I'd offer $.80 and negotiate from there.

I’m sure that negotiation would go well!

Yeah, I inevitably end up owning a lot of “projects”, but my grom and triumph start every single time. That way if I ever just want to take a ride, the machines don’t get in the way.

I don’t know, not totally sold on new EFI. A lot have moved to throttle by wire, a bunch of companies are still figuring it out. More often than not I prefer a traditional cable throttle and EFI. So basically 2000-2015 or so.

Yeah, I’ve had a couple of projects now. I didn’t mind my $100 Elite 80 being janky, because it was a $100. When my nice Super 8-150 started giving me some trouble too, I sold them both for the Zuma.
Now the $700 Helix I bought last year to do the Gambler 500-Illinois on ... I'm fed up with that pile of crap. I did all the simple basic stuff, and while it will start, it just falls on it's face over half throttle. I gave up and dropped it in the lap of my buddy who has way more experience with this stuff. If he can't figure it out, I'm just going to sell it at a loss as-is.

A few years ago I saw a listing for a 1 year old R1200GS with a 100000km, and it was at the BMW dealer so you just know whomever traded it in probably got a new one just to do it all over again.
